Perhaps more than any other textual medium of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, films have shaped our understanding of what it is to be Jewish. Jewish characters have been represented by American commercial filmmakers in a multitude of ways. Observing clips from over a hundred years of film, we will examine how the image of “the Jew” and “the Jewess” relate to Jewish experience, and demonstrate the dynamic relationship between the U.S. film industry and the dominant social paradigm of each era of production. Bernard is the creator and writer of the Kickstarter-funded comic book series, The Chieftains, based on the Book of Judges. He holds a B.A. (Honours) and a Ph. D in Religion from Concordia University, Montreal, where he has also served as Adjunct Professor. He has lectured at DePaul University (Chicago) and Carleton University.
