The Honourable Professor Irwin Cotler, P.C., O.C., M.P.

Irwin Cotler is an Emeritus Professor of Law at McGill University, former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, and an international human rights lawyer. A constitutional and comparative law scholar, Prof. Cotler intervened in landmark Charter of Rights cases in the areas of free speech, freedom of religion, minority rights, peace law and war crimes justice. An international human rights lawyer, Professor Cotler has served as Counsel to prisoners of conscience including Andrei Sakharov & Nathan Sharansky, Nelson Mandela, Jacobo Timmerman and Prof. Saad Eddin Ibrahim. He is the recipient of eleven honorary doctorates, where he has been recognized as “a scholar and advocate of international stature”. He has been named an Officer of the Order of Canada, and is also the recipient also of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. He was elected 2014 Canadian Parliamentarian of the Year by his colleagues, and recently received the Law Society of Upper Canada’s Inaugural Human Rights Award.

Professor Cotler has been recognized for his “intellectual, moral, and juridical leadership” on behalf of Israel and world Jewry, including his “legendary” work in the struggle for Soviet Jewry; played a “historical” role on behalf of Ethiopian Jewry; was Founder and Chair of the Inter-Parliamentary Coalition for Combating Antisemitism, where his leadership role was recognized by the Israeli Knesset; serves as Honorary Chair of Justice for Jews from Arab countries, is Honorary Fellow of the International Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists from which he received a Lifetime Achievement Award; and has been named one of the ten best Jewish jurists in the world.
