What is Limmud? 2017-10-04T13:24:21+00:00

Limmud, the Hebrew word for “learning,” is a volunteer run celebration and festival of Jewish thought, arts, culture, life, learning and teaching. Participants come from a wide variety of Jewish backgrounds, affiliations, denominations, circumstances and orientations. The Limmud model is built on the premise that everyone has something to learn and everyone has something to share. What’s more,Limmud is a multi-generational, multi-denominational, diverse and inclusive event, welcoming all types of Jews and creating a community of learners.

What does it mean to be a Limmud presenter? 2017-10-04T13:26:03+00:00

A Limmud presenter is both a teacher and participant. As a presenter, you will offer a 60 minute interactive session on a topic of Jewish interest—cultural, religious, geographic, or political. Any topic that has a Jewish connection is fair game: pop culture, literature, music, film, history.

How does the conference work? 2017-10-04T13:26:30+00:00

Multiple sessions are offered simultaneously throughout the day. Presenters are also participants and need to register (link will be available here once conference registration is open) for the conference. Participants, of which you are one when you are not actively presenting, are given a program guide at the beginning of the day and are encouraged to attend sessions.

How do I propose my session? 2017-10-04T13:35:55+00:00

You can use our session submission form (click here). If your session is accepted, you must be registered for the conference before we can schedule your session.

I am in high school. Can I present a session? 2017-10-04T13:27:01+00:00

Yes! Teens who wish to present should contact the Limmud Coordinator directly or submit their session online.

How many sessions can I lead? 2017-10-04T13:28:20+00:00

Most of our local presenters lead only one session. We encourage you to submit more than one topic in case we have several people who wish to speak on the same subject. Presenters from out of town (and some locals) may lead a couple sessions. It is possible that your session may not be approved for inclusion in this year’s conference due to our efforts to maintain diversity and balance in our topics, presenters, and the timing of our sessions. We will let you know which of your sessions have been chosen as soon as possible.

What topics can I cover? 2017-10-04T13:28:47+00:00

The choice is yours. Topics should relate to Judaism in some way. We encourage presenters to think outside the box, and to talk not only about their areas of specialty but also their areas of passion, including topics that may be offbeat or controversial. We also request you familiarize yourself with our Limmud values found on our website.

Do I need to clear my topics with you? 2017-10-04T13:30:03+00:00

You need to provide a topic title and brief description as part of your presenter submission process. Also, we need to know whether you will require any special audiovisual equipment or room arrangements. We ask that you consider the diversity of the audience, which includes Jews across the religious, political, ethnic and educational spectrum. Limmud Ottawa attracts participants of all ages. Let us know if your session is particularly appropriate for teens, families or young adults.

What other information do I need to provide? 2017-10-04T13:30:39+00:00

We will need a biography as part of the submission process.

Can I choose when I present? 2017-10-04T13:31:53+00:00

We try very hard to maintain diversity and balance in our topics, presenters and the timing of our sessions, so we cannot guarantee a time slot to anyone in advance. Once the schedule is finalized, we will let you know when you will present your session.
