Join Rabbi Bulka of Machzikei Hadas, Sarah Caspi of Shalom Bayit, and Benjamin Miller of MANifest Change for an informative, profound, and practical discussion of what each of us can do to help end relationship violence in the Jewish community. Panelists will discuss both statistics and personal experiences about the current state of relationship violence among young and old couples alike in the context of competing and mutually supportive Jewish values and Torah insight into modesty, privacy, and standing up for others. The panel discussion will be followed by a Q&A. Participants will leave with a better understanding of the facts and fiction of Jewish relationship violence, and with some practical and tangible steps to take in their own lives.
Benyamin Miller is a graduate student at the University of Ottawa studying political theory. He has worked with MANifest Change to facilitate tens of workshops with young men across Ottawa to help end violence against women. He is developing a unique program to address young Jewish men.
Reuven Bulka is Rabbi Emeritus of Machzikei Hadass, writer, broadcaster and activist in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and former co-president of the Canadian Jewish Congress. He received his smicha (Rabbinic ordination) from the Rabbi Jacob Joseph Rabbinical Seminary, New York, in 1965 and his Ph.D. (concentrating on the Logotherapy of Viktor Frankl) from the University of Ottawa in 1971. He received an honourary Doctor of Laws from Carleton University in 2006 for his community and humanitarian service, and was awarded the “Key to the City” in February, 2010.In June 2013 he was appointed a member of the Order of Canada,
Sarah Caspi MSW RSW is the Assistant Executive Director at Jewish Family Services of Ottawa. After completing her Masters of Social Work at Carleton University, she began her work at JFS as a facilitator in the Job Training Program and as a clinician in the Tikvah Program. She pioneered in establishing the Shalom Bayit (Peace in the home) Sarah has played a critical role in identifying cultural specific challenges of Jewish abused women. She is currently the Director and lead clinician in Shalom Bayit as well as the Director of the Thelma Steinman Seniors Support Services Unit and the Diverse Seniors Support Services Unit.
